Holistic Therapy for Burnout

When you’re exhausted in a way that sleep can’t fix, and no amount of time off helps. When you keep showing up for work, your family, and everyone who needs you, even when you’ve lost touch with your own needs. When you wake up and notice you can no longer feel peace, ease, or joy, and you wonder when the overwhelm will end…

Take a breath. You’re in the right place.

The truth is, burnout is what happens when your body can no longer metabolize the stress you’re experiencing. It’s not laziness, or some personal failing that keeps you from pushing through, it’s a depleted nervous system that has been carrying way too much for far too long.

Whether you’re coming here today overwhelmed and overflowing, or running on empty, what’s underneath it all is the same: a system with no room left for one more thing, and a you that keeps slipping further out of reach.

We want you to know: healing is possible.

Burnout is not permanent, and you don’t have to navigate it alone. Our burnout therapists can help you get to the root of what’s keeping you in an endless cycle of stress and overwhelm, so you can feel like yourself again. If you’re ready for support, we can help.

Symptoms + Signs of Burnout

Burnout doesn’t arrive all at once. It builds slowly, in the mind, the body, the heart, and the spirit, which is exactly why so many people don’t recognize it in themselves until they’re in deep. See how many of these feel familiar:

  • Exhaustion that no amount of sleep, weekends off, or a dreamy vacation seems to fix

  • Brain fog that makes it hard to concentrate; you forget simple things and read the same email three times

  • Everything takes twice as long as it used to, and small decisions feel enormous

  • A growing cynicism or dread about work and roles you used to care about

  • A shorter fuse than you’d like, followed by guilt for snapping

  • Feeling numb, just going through the motions of your life

  • Dreading the week before it even starts

  • Wired and exhausted at the same time: anxious energy on the surface, depletion underneath

  • Waking up tired no matter how early you went to bed

  • Chronic tension in your jaw and shoulders, headaches, and an unsettled gut

  • Getting sick more often than you used to

  • Leaning on caffeine to start the day, and wine or scrolling to end it

  • A quiet "is this all there is?" that you can’t stop thinking about

  • Gratitude you know you should feel, but can’t seem to access

  • Feeling cut off from your intuition, your creativity, and your spirituality

Wait...This is Burnout?

Here’s what the clinical definition sometimes misses: burnout doesn’t always mean you’re totally collapsed and unable to function anymore. Burnout can surprisingly show up in a life you love, when you’re overscheduled, overstimulated, and running at a pace that’s too hot. If any of these ring true, you might be in the burnout zone:

  • You’re high-functioning and holding it all together, but you can’t remember the last time you felt truly rested and relaxed

  • You feel keyed up and on edge, like you’re never allowed to be done for the day

  • You love your life on paper, but you can’t seem to feel the joy of it all anymore

  • Rest is on your to-do list, but it never quite happens

  • You do the yoga and the meditation, take all the supplements, and you’re still running on empty

  • You keep saying you’ll slow down and take care of yourself "soon"

If you found yourself nodding along here, take heart. Knowing that you’re dealing with burnout is the first step on the healing journey.

The Five Stages of Burnout

5 stages of burnout, burnout stages, what are the stages of burnout

Burnout can feel like you’re slowly drowning. Stress becomes overwhelm, overwhelm becomes the new norm, and before you know it, you’re burned out, often while you’re still performing beautifully! Here are the five stages of burnout, first mapped by psychologists Herbert Freudenberger and Gail North:

1. The Honeymoon

A new chapter begins and you’re all in. You feel energized, purposeful, and saying yes feels good. Underneath all the excitement, the stress has already started to collect.

2. The Onset of Stress

The daily load gets heavier. Good days still outnumber hard ones, but joy starts to feel nonexistent, and getting to the weekend is all you can think about.

3. Chronic Stress

Overwhelm becomes a permanent frequency. You keep moving faster to keep all the balls in the air, your patience is wearing thin, and your body is starting to shout. "I’ll slow down soon" becomes your new mantra.

4. Burnout

You. Hit. The. Wall. You may still be getting out of bed and getting everything done, but you’re running on autopilot, barely feeling a thing, and often on the verge of a meltdown.

5. Habitual Burnout

Running on empty stops feeling like a problem you’re trying to fix, and starts to feel like your new baseline. This is often the stage where people finally reach out for help.

Wherever you find yourself today, know that burnout is not a life sentence. It’s a signal from your nervous system, asking for attention and care. Burnout therapy can help.

How to Heal Burnout:
A Holistic Therapist’s Guide

Free Download

Inside this guide, you'll find the three parts of burnout recovery, along with seven simple, powerful practices to help your body move stress all the way through, so you can get back to living your life.

When people ask ‘How do I heal from burnout?’ Here are the three medicines for burnout recovery we come back to again and again with clients: slow down, do less, and reconnect. Simple to name, and nearly impossible to do alone, because everything in you has been trained to keep going. That’s where therapy comes in.

Together with your therapist, you’ll learn how to complete the stress cycle (the framework Emily and Amelia Nagoski map out in their book Burnout), so the stress your body has been storing finally gets to move through. You’ll practice calming and regulating your nervous system in real time. And you’ll tend to the deeper patterns that keep you over-functioning: the perfectionism, the people-pleasing, the old programming that says you’re never doing enough.

Your therapist may combine somatic therapy with polyvagal-informed work to help your body move out of survival mode, IFS to befriend the over-functioning parts of you, Brainspotting or EMDR to process what’s been held in the nervous system, and mindfulness to rebuild your capacity for presence and deep rest.

The result? You learn to do less without the guilt, move through your days slower and more present, and reconnect: to yourself, to the people you love, and to the life you built. J

Here’s what we know after years of doing this work: regulation isn’t the destination. It’s the doorway.

Once the stress cycle can complete and your body feels safe, something deeper opens up: self-love, reconnection with your essence, and the capacity for joy that burnout kept under wraps.

We believe true healing happens when we treat the whole person, not just the symptoms. That means we don't stop at helping you feel better. We walk the full path with you, from finding safety in your nervous system, to reconnecting with your heart, to remembering who you actually are underneath the pain, the programming, and the patterns.

Here’s the heart of our approach to burnout therapy:

Clinically Grounded, Spiritually Informed

Our work is rooted in evidence-based therapeutic methods. It's also informed by something deeper. We honor the spiritual dimensions of your life, not as an afterthought, but as an essential part of who you are and how you heal.

More Than Symptom Management

We look beneath the surface to understand what's actually driving your distress. The emotional threads, the body's signals, the patterns that started long before you had words for them. We're not interested in quick fixes. We want to unearth the root. For burnout, this means healing what keeps you stuck in a cycle of over-functioning, not just helping you rest more.

You Are Not Your Diagnosis

We view your struggles as messages worth listening to, not as evidence that there's something wrong with you. Our work honors you as a whole person, not a collection of problems to fix. We're here to help you reconnect with who you are beyond your symptoms and build the self-trust and self-love that are foundational to the healing journey. Burnout isn't who you are, it’s a symptom of a deeper disconnect and an invitation to deep healing.

Practical Skills + Deep Inner Work

Our sessions balance grounded, everyday strategies with deeper therapeutic exploration. Whether you're learning to regulate your nervous system, engaging in shadow work, or reconnecting with your inner child, you'll walk away with tools you can use right now and the deeper understanding that makes healing and change possible. For burnout, that means tools to complete the stress cycle starting today, and the deeper practices of learning to do less, slow down, and reconnect with yourself.

Hi, I’m Kim Burris

Founder of The Holistic Counseling Center and A Licensed Therapist

I believe that being human is a practice, and we all need support.

I know burnout all too well. Not long ago I found myself asking, "How could I be burned out? I love everything happening in my life." I noticed that over time, there was too much on my plate, and I couldn’t slow down, and before I knew it, I didn’t know how to enjoy my life anymore. Every single thing felt like a task to complete, and I was just going through the motions. I learned how to move through it all with a lot of care, support, and simple but effective daily practices. This work matters to me because I think so many of us are silently struggling, and not aware that we are in or dangerously close to the burnout zone.

If this resonates, I’m so glad you’re here. I founded The Holistic Counseling Center because I’m passionate about helping people just like you heal the root cause of your burnout, so you can live an intentional life that you can actually enjoy.

I want you to know that all of you is welcome here. There’s nothing about you or your experience that is too much, too messy, or too hard. We see you, we honor you, and we’ll walk through it with you.

If you’re ready to take the next step on your burnout healing journey, we’d be honored to support you!
